Esther's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Alice Hargreaves. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, James, Martha, Rachel, Margaret, Martha, Rachel, Elizabeth and Alice. She was the oldest of the eleven children.
