Elizabeth was born in 1835 in Manchester and her baptism took place on August 30th, 1835 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  Elizabeth's father was James Mather and her mother was Maria Beresford.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. She had two sisters named Mary and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the three children.
