Margaret's father was Thomas (James) Henry Marsden and her mother was Sarah Ann Isherwood. Her maternal grandparents were Jonathan Isherwood and Ann Mather. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Fred, Albert, Arthur, Elizabeth and Annie. She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
