Mary was born in November 1742 in Turton and her baptism took place on November 28th, 1742 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Mary's father was Benjamin Knowles and her mother was Christian Entwistle.  Her paternal grandparents were James Knowles and Agnes Bertwistle. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Benjamin, William, Hannah, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
