Benjamin's father was James Knowles and his mother was Agnes Bertwistle. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Jane, Elizabeth, Alice and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 79 in January 1791 in Turton.  He was buried on January 13th, 1791 at St. Anne (Turton).¹
