Jane's father was Benjamin Knowles and her mother was Christian Entwistle.  Her paternal grandparents were James Knowles and Agnes Bertwistle. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Benjamin, William, Hannah, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
