Sarah's father was Edward Kay and her mother was Elizabeth Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. She had three brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, Edward and Mary.  She was the oldest of the five known children. She had three half-brothers named Thomas, John and James.  She died at the age of 3 in October 1876 in Bury.  She was buried on October 30th, 1876 at St. Paul (Bury).³
