Robert was born on March 15th, 1841 in Shropshire and his baptism took place on April 1st, 1841 in Ellesmere.¹²

Robert's father was Samuel Hopley and his mother was Mary Williams. His paternal grandparents were Robert Hopley and Margaret Richards. He had three sisters named Margaret, Ann and Jane. He died at the age of 81 on February 6th, 1923 in Wrexham. His burial was in February 1923 at the Trefynant Cemetery.³⁴
