James' father was Henry Holt and his mother was Mary Lord Mather. His paternal grandparents were Henry Holt and Betty Greenhalgh; his maternal grandparents were Jeremiah (Jeremy) Mather and Alice Lord. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Nancy and Emily. He was the third oldest of the four children. He had two half-sisters named Sarah and Mary.

- James was born in Q1 1862 and the birth registered in Western Bolton. This cant be the son of Henry and Mary who had Emily Mary the same year.
  
  In 1851, there was a James Holt, son of Thomas Holt a mechanic and Martha living in Little Bolton, but this is unlikely to be him (his father Henry didnt have a brother Thomas).
