Samuel's father was Jacob Mather and his mother was Catharine Ainsworth. His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah Mather and Hannah Seddon. He had a brother and a sister, named Jacob and Nancy. He was the oldest of the three known children. He died at the age of 36 in 1814 in Radcliffe. His burial was on July 20th, 1814 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).

  Samuel appears to be part of a wealthy family as son Jeremiah had property at Breightmet.
  
  In 1807 and 1812, when Samuel had his sons James and Jeremiah, he was a farmer at Radcliffe.
  
  On 20 Jul 1814, Samuel of Radcliffe died aged 36. The following year, his Widow Betty remarried.
