Thomas was born in April 1817 in Turton and his baptism took place on April 9th, 1817 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was Thomas Dewhurst and his mother was Esther Holt.  His maternal grandparents were John Holt and Ann Crook. He had four brothers named William, James, Jonathan and Andrew.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
