Joseph was born in 1807 in Edgworth and his baptism took place on January 11th, 1807 at St. Anne (Turton).1 2  Joseph's father was William Cooper and his mother was Anne Rostron. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Jonathan, David, Charles, Elizabeth, Priscilla and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
