Jonathan was born in 1812 in Edgworth and his baptism took place on July 1st, 1812 at St. Anne (Turton).1 2  Jonathan's father was William Cooper and his mother was Anne Rostron. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Joseph, David, Charles, Elizabeth, Priscilla and Jane.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
