Robert's father was John Booth and his mother was Margaret Emmett. His paternal grandparents were Peter Booth and Mary Bond. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, James, Robert, Henry, Mary, Margaret and Amelia. He was the oldest of the eight children.
