John was born in 1827 in Aspull and his baptism took place on December 30th, 1827 at St. Katherine (B'rod).¹

John's father was Ralph Boardman and his mother was Alice Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Rachael. He was the second oldest of the three children.
