James was born in 1825 in Aspull and his baptism took place on November 13th, 1825 at St. Katherine (B'rod).¹

James' father was Ralph Boardman and his mother was Alice Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Rachael. He was the oldest of the three children.
