Maria's father was Benjamin Bennett and her mother was Mary Hewitt. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Mary Hughes. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Samuel, Humphrey, Banner, Joseph, Mary, Mary, Priscilla and Martha. She was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
