August was born on February 24th, 1837 in Wolfinghausen, Hagenburg, Schaumburg Lippe, Germany.1   August's father was Hans Henry Wilkening and his mother was Engel S.M. Hasemann. He had a brother named Wilhelm.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died at the age of 96 on October 8th, 1933 in Hamel, Madison County, Illinois.2

August and Sophia were married.  They had two sons and five daughters, named August, Henry, Emilia, Sophia, Augusta, E.S. and Louise.
