Walter was born on 24-Aug-1911 in Trossen. Walter's father was Friedrich Smollich and his mother was Emma Giesa. His paternal grandparents were Michael Smollich and ? Hartwig. He was the oldest of four children. He had two brothers and a sister, named Fritz, Ernst and Grete. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Max and Hedwig. He died, at the age of 85, on 2-Nov-1996 in Wittenberge.
