Fritz was born in Trossen. Fritz's father was Friedrich Smollich and his mother was Emma Giesa. His paternal grandparents were Michael Smollich and ? Hartwig. He was the youngest of four children. He had two brothers and a sister, named Walter, Ernst and Grete. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Max and Hedwig. He died in 1944.
