Pieter's father was Hendrik Storm and his mother was Neeltje van der Schalje.  His maternal grandparents were Pieter Pieters van der Schalje and Catharina Oliviers de Wilde. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Henrie, Pieter, Abraham, Geertrui and Gijsje.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
