Geertrui's father was Hendrik Storm and her mother was Neeltje van der Schalje.  Her maternal grandparents were Pieter Pieters van der Schalje and Catharina Oliviers de Wilde. She had four brothers and a sister, named Henrie, Pieter, Pieter, Abraham and Gijsje.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
