Gijsje's father was Hendrik Storm and her mother was Neeltje van der Schalje.  Her maternal grandparents were Pieter Pieters van der Schalje and Catharina Oliviers de Wilde. She had four brothers and a sister, named Henrie, Pieter, Pieter, Abraham and Geertrui.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
