Ethel was born on September 14th, 1880 in Fort William, West Bengal, India and her baptism took place there on July 29th, 1887.  Ethel's father was Mr Charles Thorpe and her mother was Mrs Frederica Horatia Marian Macleod.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr David Brannon Thorpe and Mrs Caroline Matilda Turner; her maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alan, Herbert, Frederica and Ada.  She was the youngest of the five children.
