Ada was born on April 17th, 1873 in Simla, Himachal Pradesh, India and her baptism took place there on November 5th, 1873.  Ada's father was Mr Charles Thorpe and her mother was Mrs Frederica Horatia Marian Macleod.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr David Brannon Thorpe and Mrs Caroline Matilda Turner; her maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Alan, Herbert, Frederica and Ethel.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
