Alan was born on November 10th, 1869 in Simla, Himachal Pradesh, India and his baptism took place there on November 24th, 1869.  Alan's father was Mr Charles Thorpe and his mother was Mrs Frederica Horatia Marian Macleod.  His paternal grandparents were Mr David Brannon Thorpe and Mrs Caroline Matilda Turner; his maternal grandparents were Mr Donald Macleod and Mrs Ann Catherine Heron. He had a brother and three sisters, named Herbert, Frederica, Ada and Ethel.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
