Mary was born in 1820 in Horkstow, Lincoln, England and his christening took place on March 30th, 1820 in Saint Maurice Church, Horkstow, Lincoln, England.  Mary's father was John Stephenson Rack and his mother was Mary Carr. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named John, William, Sarah, Rebecca, Helen, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne, Emma, Hannah and Jane.
