Helen was born in 1822 in Horkstow, Lincoln, England and her baptism took place on June 30th, 1822 in Saint Maurice Church, Horkstow, Lincoln, England.  Helen's father was John Stephenson Rack and her mother was Mary Carr. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Mary, John, William, Sarah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne, Emma, Hannah and Jane.
