Joseph, known as Joe, was born on August 28th, 1888 in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England and his baptism took place on September 18th, 1888 in St Barnabas Church, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England. Joe's father was Mr Robert Freeston and his mother was Mrs Lucy Ann Roe. His paternal grandparents were Mr William Freeston and Mrs Mary Kirk; his maternal grandparents were Mr Nicholas Roe and Mrs Ann Bullivant. He had five brothers and five sisters, named George, Robert, Frank, Ernest, Harry, Annie, Nellie, Alice, Lucy and Ruth. He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 28 on April 11th, 1917 in Bullecourt, Pas-de-Calais, France. He was buried in 1917 in Wancourt British Cemetery, France.¹¹

General Notes
- His medal card had the wrong name, 'John' instead of Joseph. Possibly confused with his cousin John who was also killed in France. The card states Campaign B.E.F. 1914 (British Expeditionary Force), 1st Lincolnshire Regiment, Private 9617. K. in A. 11-4-17. Disembarkation date: 13-8-14.
  
  Movements of 1st Bt:
  
  1st Battalion August 1914 : in Portsmouth. Part of 9th Brigade, 3rd Division. Landed at Le Havre on 14 August 1914. 14 November 1915 : transferred to 62nd Brigade, 21st Division. The Bermuda Rifle Volunteer Corps sent a contingent of 2 officers and 125 men, who served with 1st Lincolns from June 1915 onwards. They had suffered 75% casualties by the end of the war.

  I assume Joseph died in the first part of the Battle of Arras, probaby at the Scarpe, or part of the flanking manouver around Bullecourt.
