Jane was born in 1847 in Covenham, Lincolnshire, England.  Jane's father was Mr William Freeston and her mother was Mrs Mary Kirk.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr Joseph Gibson Freeston and Mrs; her maternal grandparents were Mr James Kirk and Mrs Mary Parker?. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Robert, Ann, Elizabeth and Eliza.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
