Ann was born in 1840 in Covenham, Lincolnshire, England.  Ann's father was Mr William Freeston and her mother was Mrs Mary Kirk.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr Joseph Gibson Freeston and Mrs; her maternal grandparents were Mr James Kirk and Mrs Mary Parker?. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Robert, Elizabeth, Jane and Eliza.  She was the oldest of the six children.
