Charles was born in 1816 in Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England and his baptism took place on October 28th, 1816 in St Peter and St Paul Church, Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, England. Charles' father was Mr John Clark and his mother was Mrs Mary NK. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Jonathan, John, John, Henry, Ann and Mary.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
