May was born in 1895. May's father is Daniel Hallas and her mother was Louisa Cowling. Her paternal grandparents are Daniel Hallas and Ann Wilson; her maternal grandparents are David Cowling and Mary. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Arthur, Ernest, David, Fred, Annie, Lily Alice and Edith. She is the youngest of the eight children.
