Walter was born in 1840 in Eling.  Walter's father is John Osman.  His paternal grandparents were John Osman and Hannah Forrester. He has seven brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Mark, George, John, Eliza, Joseph, Noah, Mary, Jane and Hannah.  He is the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
