William was born in 1831 in Beer, Devon.  William's father was William Boalch and his mother was Harriet Green.  His paternal grandfather was William Hodge Boalch and his paternal grandmother is Phoebe Litton. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Robert, William, James, Phoebe, Anna, Harriet, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He is the fifth oldest of the ten children.
