James' father was William Mackenzie and his mother was Isabella Tolmie.  His paternal grandparents were William Mackenzie and Ann Chisholm; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Tolmie and Elizabeth Gollan. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Alex, Daniel, Ann, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret and Isabella.
