Elizabeth was born in 1870.  Elizabeth's father was William Mackenzie and her mother was Isabella Tolmie.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mackenzie and Ann Chisholm; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Tolmie and Elizabeth Gollan. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Alex, James, Daniel, Ann, Mary, Margaret and Isabella.
