Renato's father was João Marçal Gomes and his mother was Isilda Freitas Morna.  His maternal grandparents were  João Firmino Freitas Morna and  Maria de Jesus.  He was the youngest of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Humberto, Fernando, Rui, Maria  and Ligia.
