Fernando's father is João Marçal Gomes and his mother is Isilda Freitas Morna.  His maternal grandparents were  João Firmino Freitas Morna and  Maria de Jesus.  He is the third of six children.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Humberto, Rui, Renato, Maria  and Ligia.
