Maria 's father is João Marçal Gomes and her mother is Isilda Freitas Morna.  Her maternal grandparents were  João Firmino Freitas Morna and  Maria de Jesus.  She is the oldest of six children.  She had four brothers and a sister, named Humberto, Fernando, Rui, Renato and Ligia.
