Johann Martin was born on April 20th, 1757 in Dreisbach, Germany.  Johann Martin's father was Joannes Helsper and his mother was Anna Maria Helsper.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Jost Helsper and Eva Maria Heidrich; his maternal grandparents were Joh. Best Helsper and Anna Dorothea. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Joannes, Anna Maria, Eva, Anna Cath, Eva Maria, Eva, Anna Elisabeth and Anna Gertrud.  He was the second youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Cathrin.
