Bernard was born on April 29th, 1916.  Bernard's father was Anthony Hardes and his mother was Martha Wieseler.  His maternal grandparents were Henry Wieseler and Renata Schmidt.  He had two brothers and three sisters, named Lawrence, Louis, Renata, Laura and Frances.  He is the oldest of the six children.
