Lawrence was born in 1923.  Lawrence's father was William Gropper and his mother was Rose Louise Glanzman.  His paternal grandparents were John Wolf Gropper and Henrietta Stephen; his maternal grandparents were Frederick Glanzman and Bertha Liechti.  He has a brother and two sisters, named Clayton, Dolores and Wanda.  He is the third oldest of the four children.
