      This was about 23 acres that they purchased from Truman L. Pratt for $30 on March 22, 1846. It was in Section 36 of Viola Township (east part of the northwest quarter), in "Little Malugin Grove". On January 18, 1847, Jabez bought 4 acres in the southwest quarter of Section 34 (Viola Town¬ship) from Samuel Melugin, this was in the northern part of Melugin's Grove. Jabez also owned the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter in Section 36 of Viola, but sold this on January 3, 1859 to John Robinson for $280. It is believed that the land in the south¬east part of Section 36 that was to become the "family farm" of Susan and Jabez was not bought until November of 1860. It is inter¬esting to note that on the 1850 Lee County census, Jabez and Susan owned 90 acres of improved land, 25 acres of unimproved land (cash value of farm was $800), the value of his farming implements was $30, they owned 1 horse, 2 milk cows, 1 other cattle, 10 sheep, 8 pigs (value of live stock was $88), also 480 bu. of Indian corn & 30 bu. of oats.
