Rachel was born on June 9th, 1911. Rachel's father was Petrus Gerhadus Louw van Blerck and her mother was Sarah Margaretha Joubert. Her paternal grandparents were Siemon (Paatjie) Petrus van Blerck and Jacomina Hendrina Louw. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Simon, Jan, Petrus, Stephanus, Jacobus, Paul, Sarah, Jacomina and Maria. She is the fourth youngest of the ten children.
