His paternal grandfather was Thomas Reeder and his paternal grandmother is Mary Heaton; his maternal grandparents were James Walmsley and Mary Cleaver. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Robert, John, William, Mary Jane and Isabella. He was the youngest of the eight children.
