    Thomas Reeder, Machine Maker, Green Bank Iron Works, Byron Street and Sizer Street, Preston. - This business, which is one of the foremost ofits kind in Preston, was founded in the present premises by Mr. Robert Heaton in 1847, and has been the property of Mr. Reeder since 1858. Theworks are of large extent, and are equipped with all kind of engineer'smachines, including lathes, screwing and other tools and appliances ofthe most modern design, as well as several special appliances invented by Mr. Reeder for facilitating the important work carried on. This firm's name is most popular in connection with the textile industries, especially the weaving department, for which the house does an extensive business in manufacturing iron and steel flanges for warpers' and weavers' yarn beams; measuring rollers, which are famous for being themost approved in the market for measuring accurately, measuring warps in the process of beaming, slashing, dressing and other like purposes, andinvaluable where two or more machines work together all of them requiring to give a proportionate length. Besides these patent measuring rollers this house is constantly busy in the production of a patent iron 'taking-up' and yarn beams for power looms, an invention of  Mr. Reeder's which has won for him renown amongst all the weaving districts in the kingdom. The trade of the firm, in which a large staff of hands are employed, is consequently very extensive, and the business connection is of the most influential order. Mr. Reeder has long been known as a highly skilled mechanic who possesses inventive powers of the highest order, and the honourable methods that have always characterised the management ofhis business have gained for him the esteem and confidence of all withwhom he comes in contact.
