Mary Ann was born in February 1828.  Mary Ann's father was Hercules Stephens and her mother was Jane Behenna.  Her maternal grandparents were Ferdinando Behenna and Ann Tregaskis. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Henry, James, John, Hercules, Fanny, Jane, Elizabeth and Caroline.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
