Martin was born in 1857.  Martin's father was Martin Skewes and his mother was Catherine Green.  His paternal grandparents were Martin Skewes and Ann Hocking. He had a sister named Mary.  He was the older of the two children. He had two half-sisters named Elizabeth and Emily.  He died at the age of 33 in 1890.
