William was born in July 1792.  William's father was Henry Behenna and his mother was Mary Creago.  His paternal grandparents were Ferdinando Behenna and Mary Skewes. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Henry, Ferdinando, John, Mary, Nancy, Betsy, Nancy and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
